How much is a regular worth?

Your loyal guests are the foundation of a successful business. See just how much below.

1Your restaurant

Choose what fits best. Swap in your real numbers wherever you know them.

2What seeing your guests would change

Turn each lever on or off and adjust the assumptions to fit your group.

Turn more first-timers into regulars

69% of first-time guests never come back, but guests who reach visit four almost always stay (95%). Seeing who visited once lets you reach them before they forget you.

One more visit per regular per year

The smallest lever there is: each regular comes in just once more a year, from a timely reason to return.

Introduce regulars to your other restaurants

A regular at one of your spots already trusts you. Today you can't see that they've never tried the others.

Catch slipping regulars before they're gone

Card data shows which regulars have gone quiet while there's still time to bring them back. Without it, they just disappear.

Where the starting numbers come from

Hard data
  • Coffee regulars visit 2–4 times a week (Toast, Square)
  • 69% of first-time guests never return (Upserve Guest Data / Magid)
  • 95% of guests who reach a fourth visit keep coming back (Paytronix 2025)
  • Average checks are median figures (Paytronix Loyalty Report)
Derived
  • QSR and fast casual visits per year, from the share of guests who visit weekly or more: 72% and 49% (Technomic)
  • Casual full-service visits per year, from an average of 5 dine-outs a month (US Foods)
Estimated
  • Upscale casual and fine dining / steakhouse visit frequency. Directionally supported by special-occasion dining data, but no public per-segment count exists.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate the value of a regular?

Average check × visits per year. A casual full-service regular at $39 a visit, 18 times a year, is worth about $702 a year.

Why don't first-time guests come back?

69% never return, usually because there's no reason or reminder to, not a bad meal (Upserve Guest Data / Magid). Guests who reach a fourth visit are different: 95% keep coming (Paytronix 2025).

How do I know how many regulars I have?

Your guest data. A POS that recognizes returning cards, like Upserve's guest book, shows who visits, how often, and who's gone quiet. Until then, a manager's estimate is a fine starting point.

Is the result revenue or profit?

Revenue. Apply your own margin to estimate profit.

How accurate is it?

It's an estimate from published benchmarks, each labeled under the calculator. Every number is editable, so it's as accurate as your inputs. Use it to size the opportunity, not as a forecast.
