New version is out. Spammunition 0.62 Beta. Grab it in the download page.

For installation - first you must UNINSTALL the old version in Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel. If the uninstall doesn't delete your Spammunition data directory (most likely "Program Files/Spammunition") then you can go ahead and manually delete it if you want. If you don't delete it, Spammunition will use your existing spam probabilities, which is fine.

I'd make it such that you don't need to uninstall (so that you can simply upgrade), but the VISE installer is not cooperating on one of my DLLs for some reason. That should be fixed soon. Anyway, here's what's new:

- Vastly improved memory management during "Analyze Words" phase. Now able to handle LOTS more mail to analyze.
- Fixed bug about not weeding out HTML comments
- New icon! :)
- Empty spam or good folder won't create error "Runtime error 380, Invalid Property value" during analysis
- Won't get errors when clicking IE mailto links and Outlook isn't open (This also should fix the Syncing problems with PalmPilots & other handhelds - can someone please report to me their experience here)
- Fixed bug that caused a spam probability miscalculation on using multiple "good" folders
- Lots of other small bug fixes

Hopefully this version will be a lot more stable for everyone. If this seems to be the case, then I can concentrate on programming in new features. Of course, first on the list is making it so that you don't need to keep old spam around any more.

Email me with any issues! Thanks!

Quick update. The new version, which is 0.62 beta, has vastly improved memory handling over the current version. It's a little bit slower, but now it's able to handle much larger amounts of email during the "Analyze Words" phase without going bonkers on memory usage. It's also a little slower because it's doing more in-depth analysis of the words. But it's looking good. Lots of bugs have been fixed. Now if I can only get the VISE installer to behave well, 0.62 will be out very soon.

Surprisingly (to me), I continue to get a lot of email from people that would like to donate money to the Spammunition project, even if just a few dollars. Now you can.

For donations, I've setup an Amazon Honor System paybox. It's very easy to use, especially if you already have an Amazon.com account. Using it, you can donate as little as $1.00, or as much as $50.

To donate, click the "Click to Pay" graphic below. Or for more details, go to the new "Donate" page. Thanks.

I've found a bug in version 0.61 that deals with multiple folders. It is making the spam calculations somewhat inaccurate. If you are using multiple folders to store good email, and you've noticed that Spammunition has become less effective at filtering spam, this bug is the reason why. I've addressed it and it will be fixed for the next version. Hopefully the new version will be out in a day or two. It's mostly bug fixes.

New version released! 0.61 Beta is now available. Lots of new features and bug fixes. Go to the download area to grab it! Also, the usage and installation instructions page has been updated.

Note: If you have a previous copy of Spammunition installed, you must uninstall it first from Add/Remove Programs in the Winows Control Panel.

Here's what's new in 0.61 Beta:

  • Fixed delete and undelete spam bug with buttons being pushed in the same folder
  • Added email address whitelist
  • Added ability to choose multiple "real email" folders for analyzing word probabilities
  • Can change default inbox
  • Can change spam folder after setting it for the first time
  • Fixed whitelist runtime error bugs
  • Fixed various other bugs (too many to list!)

As always, report those bugs to me. I get a lot of email, so my apologies in advance if I don't respond. I read them all though.

Everyone have a happy new year!

I'm back from vacation. Thanks to everyone for sending me the bug reports while I was gone - they are helpful.

Turns out some people are indeed having success using Norton Antivirus in conjunction with Spammunition. So there's some research to be done there on my part.

Hopefully I can release the new version in a day or two. Fingers crossed. The beta testers that are reviewing the next release have reported positive things, so that's good news. It'll have multiple folder support for "good mail," and the ability to change your default inbox and spam folders. Basic stuff here folks. But it is still catching spam extremely well for me, which is the important part.

My next update should be the release of the new version, 0.61 Beta.

First of all, happy holidays to everyone.

I want to thank Mark at 9thtee.com for donating MS Office XP to the Spammunition effort. A very generous gift indeed -- thanks for supporting this freeware project. Now I'll be able to test on that platform.

    A few things:
    - I will be out of town from Monday the 23rd to Sunday the 29th. I'll have very limited access to email during that period.
    - Currently, spammunition will not work for you if you have Norton Antivirus installed (or McAfee). NAV alters the way Outlook functions and will create problems with Spammunition. I'm researching a workaround for this. If anyone has successfully dealt with this problem before, let me know!
    - I've gotten a ton of requests to create a mailing list to alert people when new versions come out. I hear you loud and clear. A mailing list will be available in the future. For now, just keep coming back to the website occasionally for updates.
    - All new features that will be in the next version are finished. Now I'm just trying to fix some of the remaining bugs that people have been writing in about. I think the next version will be ready for release in the first week of January. It would be sooner but I'm going to be out of town.

    Everyone have a great week!

There's a lot of confusion out there as to whether or not you need to keep spam in your spam folder after clicking "Analyze Words." I guess my documentation needs some work there... In this version, you DO have to keep your spam in your spam folder, even after analyzing the words. Every time you click "Analyze Words," the analysis starts from scratch. So don't delete your spam.

I realize this is not the ideal solution, but that's how it works at the moment. It's clunky, I know. Future versions will give you an option to delete the spam after the analysis phase.

So remember, the more spam you keep in your spam folder, the more accurately Spammunition will detect it. Consequently, the more emails you keep in your inbox, the more accurate the whole process will be.

    New version news:
The email address whitelist feature is complete and will be included in the next version.
The ability to use multiple folders with "Analyze Words" is being coded right now.
You'll also be able to change your default inbox and spam folder.
I've also made a slew of bug fixes, so thanks for reporting all those errors. Even if I haven't responded to your email, I've definitely acknowledged it.

Unfortunately there seems to be some fairly consistent errors with those of you using Outlook 2002 and Outlook XP. Overall, it seems like bug reports from Outlook 2000 users are in the minority. That's easily explained -- I am building and testing this app on Outlook 2000. After researching the COM Add-In compatibility among the three versions, I was fairly certain that there wouldn't be issues of this type. But obviously there are. The bad part is that I don't even own Outlook 2002 or Outlook XP, so I have no way of testing Spammunition with those Outlook versions at the moment. My apologies to Outlook 2002 and XP users. I'll try to acquire those programs soon. Ahhh, the joys of freeware development.

Tons of traffic today! Due to a mention in the Langa List, the site was extremely busy all day. Good to see. Thanks to Bob Schaefer for mentioning Spammunition to Fred.
PS - To anyone who's written in - I'm still trying to get through all the emails I've received, so please be patient. Thanks!
PPS - I've received a lot of mail inquiring about a version for Outlook Express. I won't be making an Outlook Express version any time soon -- sorry. Believe me, if I could, I would.

Note: Some of you are reporting that the current version doesn't always search for spam when new mail arrives in the inbox. If that happens, click the "Hunt Spam" button. That will manually kick off the process to search for spam in your inbox. It only searches UNREAD mail.
